Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
(Editors Note: Well so much for queued posts! I ended up setting the images to post on December 25th of next year and straight up missed the actual day! Nevertheless, here are the images with some additional updates from the studio, now that the New Year has arrived.)
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and start to the new year! Shortly after the holiday, I came down with some form of bronchitis-esque flu, which I am still dealing with. My illness is currently in that frustrating place between "debilitating & distracting" and "not bad enough for hospitalization," so I will press on. I did manage to see one friend before the new year, but missed the NYE festivities altogether.
Anyways, here are the final two pieces for the Advent Calendar! It was quite a feat, and while it did add a bit of workload to the already hectic holiday, I did enjoy the hour or so I could devote exclusively to just making something fun and seasonal. It was especially nice since most of the holiday-themed work for clients had to be over before the Christmas season really started (due to the nature of print and production). These final two pieces focus on the Nativity and Santa Claus. My family always goes to Midnight Mass together on the 24th, so Christmas Eve and Christmas itself has always felt like a "night-time" holiday. This illustration is simple and modest, as well as readable when shrunk down. The 25th, now that I'm older, is about watching the little kids enjoy "Santa" and relaxing with family. This illustration of Santa comes from an old oil painting of Santa in my Grandpa's house. I sketched and painted this on the iPad using Procreate (which was a first for me and a first in this calendar). The app lends itself to paint and ink with its fantastic set of brushes, so I decided to ink sketch the jovial Santa and paint underneath the sketch. I was really pleased with the result and I think it captures Santa nicely.
Well, that's it for today, but there's a lot of new stuff coming for the new year. I will not only be selling this entire advent calendar as a large print, but I have a number of other items nearing the point of sale. I've got a handful of collaborative projects with friends coming down the pike too! Also, as is custom for a designer, I'll have a new rev of my portfolio and website coming in the next few months. All the while, I'm still running the studio, working for my excellent and various clients, and doing some great design work that I'm proud of. Happy New Year everyone, here's to 2013.
